E-TICK: An Invitation to Transform How We Communicate

At Power of Listening, we often return to one guiding question: how can we create a more compassionate world through the way we speak, listen, and connect with one another? The E-TICK online course—short for E-t(r)ick Your Mind—is a resource that beautifully aligns with this mission. Offered freely by SCI Slovenia and hosted at ethicalcommunication.org, this course is a rich, self-paced journey into the heart of ethical communication.

What Is E-TICK?

E-TICK is a 10-week course consisting of 87 thoughtfully designed lessons. It invites participants to reflect deeply on the ways we think, share, and engage—particularly in a world shaped by digital platforms, cultural diversity, and power imbalances. The course doesn’t offer quick fixes or formulas. Instead, it creates space for reflection, dialogue, and new perspectives. It is ideal for anyone engaged in social work, volunteering, youth work, education, or simply anyone who wishes to communicate more consciously.

A Glimpse Into the Course Modules

Each module explores key themes related to ethical storytelling, media literacy, cultural sensitivity, and the responsibility we carry as communicators:

  • Shifting Perspectives: Understanding how unconscious bias and stereotypes shape our views.
  • Who Gets to Communicate What?: Exploring the importance of diverse narratives and the dangers of a “single story.”
  • Cultural Appreciation or Cultural Appropriation?: Looking at how we engage with cultures not our own, and the lines between respect and harm.
  • To Hell With Good Intentions: A critical look at international volunteering and the unintended consequences of well-meaning actions.
  • Beauty and Perception: Challenging the norms and ideals we absorb from society.
  • Algorithmic Influence: Understanding how social media and tech shape our views—and what it means for communication ethics.

The course combines short readings, interactive activities, videos, and personal reflection prompts. It can be followed step-by-step or explored freely, depending on your pace and interests.

Why We Recommend It
